How To Get Rid Of Dark Circles Once And For All

Dark circles. We dread even to utter the words… let alone deal with the problem. Sadly, however, they can (and do) happen. If (as we are) you’re tired of the occasional -- or possibly permanent -- the appearance of circles under your eyes, then read on and find out why dark circles occur, and how you can treat them (hopefully forever).

Why do dark circles under eyes appear?

Ah, the million-dollar question! If you’re wondering this then you’re right on track with the rest of us. Let’s go through some of the main causes so you can put your curiosity about where dark circles come from to rest! (Spoiler alert: rest is key.) Sound good? Good.

Sleeplessness

As you may have guessed, the leading cause of dark circles stems from shortchanging yourself on the optimal number of Z’s every night. You should know that when you don’t clock the ideal amount of dream time (7-8 hours, folks!), your skin is prone to thinning. (Yes, we’re serious, and yes, this sounds scary.)

This thinning, in turn, causes the capillaries in the area under your eyes to become more prominent, thus giving you visible dark circles on that delicate under-eye skin.

Allergies

Thought your allergies were just the bane of your nose’s existence? Not so. Dark circles and allergies waltz together, dear friends, and (much like waltzing itself) the results are not appealing.

Here’s a bit of scientific reasoning on why this happens: Due to the histamines the body releases in an allergic reaction, you can wind up with itchy eyes (sound familiar?). When the itching starts it’s only natural to want to rub your eyes. For those who cave and do so the result is irritated skin under your eyes, which leads to broken blood vessels, and voila (you guessed it) dark circles.

Genetics

Much like sleep and allergies, the next prominent player in the line-up for what causes dark circles are your genes. If you’re having some less-than-lovely eye issues you can shoutout your mom and dad and say “THANKS”.

The cause of this, as outlined in one 2015 study, stems from an increase in melanin and deoxygenated blood in the eye area. The result of both? Darker spots under your eyes.

Now for your saving grace… how to make these dark circles go away?

While dark circles can result from genetics or a lack of sleep, there are still ways you can minimize their appearance for good. Let’s hop into those below.

Use Vitamin E Mixed With Almond Oil

When it comes to solving dark circles we like natural treatments (shocker). That’s why our first option is to treat dark circles with vitamin e capsules or bottled oil mixed with almond oil. Vitamin E is a known antioxidant that nourishes the skin and almond oil is full of good-for-you fatty acids that can revitalize your complexion. Used in tandem, applying twice daily, you’ll see dark circles fade away.

Here’s how to get the best results:

  1. Open the capsule of vitamin e or place a few small drops of vitamin e oil into your hands.

  2. Add a few drops of almond oil to the mix.

  3. Rub together.

  4. Apply gently to the area under your eyes.

  5. Repeat daily until dark circles diminish.

Note: If you choose to use Vitamin E capsules, just break them open carefully in your hand, blend with almond oil, and apply to the eye area.

Use Tea Bags

Sometimes Grandma’s tips actually work! In the case of hiding dark circles like a pro, using the old tea bags trick is a go. The reason is simple: caffeine helps to narrow the blood vessels around your eye and reduce the blood flow, creating less noticeable dark spots.

Here’s how to get the best results:

  1. Boil water and let the tea bags steep for a bit, making it warm.

  2. Transfer the tea bags into your fridge for a few so you won’t burn yourself.

  3. Remove and place a tea bag on each eye.

  4. Let them sit for 5 minutes.

  5. Remove and rinse with cold water.

Use An Antioxidant-Enriched Eye Serum

The final option, and largely our favorite, is incorporating an eye serum into your daily ritual. The reason it’s our favorite, is that eye serums are formulated to specifically target certain issues (e.g. your dark circles). Nothing beats an all-in-one stop for eye care, amirite?!
