HOW TO UNCLOG PORES NATURALLY

As we’re sure you know by now, the skin is the body's largest organ. It has millions of pores, most of which are invisible to the naked eye. Pores on the skin are teeny tiny holes through which sweat and oil travel to reach the skin's surface. Pores that seem dilated and are visible to the naked eye are considered enlarged (i.e. not ideal). Open pores are an issue for many people and they can lead to bulld-ups and break-outs.

What causes clogged pores?

Excess oil (sebum production from sebaceous glands), dead skin cells, and over-cleansing are the 3 primary causes of clogged pores.

Causes 1 & 2: Excess Oil and dead skin

Excess oil and dead skin begin to build on the skin's surface over time, and when they’re not cleared out things get, well, messy. Think accumulation of dirt, bacteria, and sweat.

Cause 3: Over cleansing and exfoliating

Cleansing and exfoliating should be part of your skin care regimen, yes, but too much of a good thing can be harmful. If you scrub or exfoliate your skin too frequently, you risk depriving the skin barrier of its natural oils, which can cause your oil glands to overcompensate and produce even more oil. The extra oil might then block your pores. Ugh!

Also, worth noting...

Some of your favorite cosmetic products may be to blame for blocked pores as well. The key to solving this puzzle? Search for cosmetics with non-comedogenic formulations, which are made with non-clogging components (and use good-for-you skincare like 10 Degrees Cooler!)

How to unclog pores on the face naturally?

Steaming

When you expose your face to steam, your pores will open up and your skin will sweat. This in turn, lifts accumulated debris in the skin's pores and releases it. Hello, clear pores! Luckily, there are many tools on the market for steaming. A quick google search will bring your countless options.

Egg Mask

Not just for your morning omelette. Egg masks are excellent for tightening pores and protecting the skin from pollutants. The use of an egg mask will open and seal pores, giving the skin a more supple appearance.

Directions:

  1. Whip an egg until it's foamy.

  2. Keep it in the refrigerator for 5 min.

  3. When you take it out from the refrigerator, mix the juice of half of lemon into it.

  4. Apply to clogged pores.

  5. Let it sit for 10 min, then rinse it off with warm water.

Lemon Juice

Lemon's citric acid is good at removing perspiration and dirt from the skin. Seriously. When fresh lemon juice is diluted with warm water and applied to the skin, it effectively cleanses the skin and makes it seem fresh.

Directions:

  1. Place some lemon juice on a cotton ball.

  2. Rub gently over the skin.

  3. Rinse it off using lukewarm water, and pat dry.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is an affordable technique to remove dead skin and dirt from the skin. It may be used as a scrub to exfoliate your skin or added to your face wash to keep your skin clean. Just be mindful to use small amounts.

Directions:

  1. Mix together 2 tsp baking soda and 1 tsp water.

  2. Apply the paste all over the face.

  3. Leave on for 5 minutes, rinse your face with lukewarm water and pat it dry.

Honey & Cinnamon

Honey and cinnamon are a powerful combination that not only clears pores, but also adds a shine to the complexion. It's great for calming down irritated skin. Honey and cinnamon both have antibacterial qualities that can assist with acne.

Directions:

  1. To start with, apply few drops of honey (cinnamon mixed in) on the skin.

  2. Massage it for a few seconds
