With beach days right around the corner (where’d the time go?), it’s important to start focusing on summertime skin care. After all, we all want glowing skin in the summer (sans the sunburn), don’t we? Today we’re going to review the best ways to care for the two trickiest skin types in the summer… This way you’re prepped and ready for the best summer skin yet!
Ready? Let’s dive into these skin types and ways to stay on top of caring for them!
How to care for oily skin in the summer
While we all look forward to sipping lemon cucumber water on the beach, some dread the repercussions of summer weather -- oily summer skin. If you’re someone that deals with this, know that you’re not alone.
Oily skin occurs in the summer as the body tries to acclimate to the surrounding environment. Rising humidity levels and temperatures lead the body to produce more sebum (a.k.a oil) which, when mishandled, can cause build-ups and breakouts. Ugh!
So, how do you combat this sticky (pun intended) situation? Well, there are a few things you can do.
Creating an approved oily skin care in summer routine is the first line of defense.
This looks like:
Not Over-cleansing. Contrary to common belief, cleansing more doesn’t eliminate excess oil. In fact, it strips the skin, and makes it produce even more of the stuff. Be sure to cleanse 2 times a day, with organic cleansers and no more.
Up Your Moisturizer Game. The key to keeping the temperatures from getting to your sebum glands is to stay moisturized. Without moisture, your skin will be forced to make more sebum to combat a dry complexion… and we all know that’s the last thing you want!
Targeted face oils. Add to your list a targeted face oil that will protect your skin from environmental stressors known to cause the skin to act up.
If you use this summer skin care routine for oily skin, you’ll be able to soak up the sun without any bummer breakout moments, guaranteed.
How to care for dry skin in the summer
Okay, so you’re on the opposite end of the spectrum and suffer from dry skin, eh? Worry not! We have you covered, too.
First, let’s review why you’re ending up with a drier complexion in the first place.
One of the more obvious reasons is that warmer weather leads to more sun exposure. And if there’s one thing that’ll sap the moisture from your skin it’s those glorious rays of sunshine! This causes dehydration which, in turn, results in dry complexions. There are other factors involved here too -- such as chlorine from long dips in the pool, or salty ocean water giving you sponge-like skin (momentarily, we hope).
That said, not all is lost. There are a few ways to combat dry summer skin. Here is an ideal summer routine:
Keep A Facial Mist On Hand. Whether this is one of those throwback fan-and-water-bottles or something more, well, chic (like rose water), the goal is to have a hydrator available at all times to conquer your skin’s thirst.
Use A Body Oil. The best way to combat dry summer skin? Adding an all-over body oil to your routine. After you shower, lock in moisture and protect the skin from the summer air by anointing yourself with an oil-based body moisturizer (like our 08 Buriti Body Oil, for instance!)
Invest In Excellent SPF. Goes without saying… Sunscreen up and protect yourself from dry skin in the summer.
If you add these tricks to your summer skin routine you’ll be golden (in the right way).
